The Fijian Cacao Bean Story

Three years ago the She team had a burning inspiration to visit a cacao plantation. A wonderful inspiring story has unfolded from the first visit three years ago to the Namou Brothers Organic Cacao Gardens in Fiji. Our hearts were so touched from this first visit that we were determined to support this Cacao farming region. It is becoming a reality:

Our aim is to support a collective return to Cacao farming in Fiji, to re-establish a struggling industry and reunite families where fathers were forced to work in other jobs away from their homes.

The Tailevu province in Fiji 7 years ago produced over 100 tonnes of Cacao, now they produce about 10 tonnes. The farmers were not able to receive a sustainable income from the crop and had to leave their farms.

Our objective is to work with the central co-op and re-activate these beautiful farms where the trees are still producing, but only the birds are enjoying the fruits!!!

At the moment we buy beans from one farm, roast them and rolled them in organic French coverture chocolate, creating a decadent super food: Chocolate Rolled Fijian Cacao Beans
We have also created the Bula bean, a creamy ganache, held in a chocolate shell, infused with Fijian vanilla and cacao nibs from the farm.

The Co-ops ninety-two farmers are all inspired to return to working their farms, and it is important that they deliver a high quality product, we open a market for this product in New Zealand and they receive a fair trade price for their beans. This will mean hard work and discipline on their part and support, expertise and building a new market on ours. It is an enriching uplifting and inspiring project, where hearts can truly meet and together deliver

a beautiful product that is about nurturing a wholeness
cultural revolution around the globe encouraging
humanity to discover our potential of
living in greater harmony
and creativity as one.

What's Happening Now?

Posted Dec 6th 2010
We are currently working with the Tailevu Coco Co-op on:

1) A fermentation program that will ensure high quality beans for next season's crop (April 2011).

2) A roasting program that will allow the farmers to roast their own beans which will bring added value to the product on the farm

3) A cookbook that uses these roasted beans that can be used by the many high caliber resorts around Fiji in their baking

4) A drinking chocolate that uses these beans that can be sold by the farms
